Abstract

(Basilius Dohovitsh's Philosophy of Nature) The Subcarpathian, so-called Rusyn culture was not such developed in the 18-19th centuries as the contemporary Hungarian or Ukrainian or the Slovakian culture. That is because of the Greek Catholic clergy was the only establishment of the region. It is better and more exact to speak about the 'national movement in Subcarpathia' than to study the 'Subcarpathian enlightenment' which phenomenon had not existed. Basilius Dohovitsh was the first author in the 'Subcarpathian Rus' who published his essays in the field of a cosmological theory and astronomy in Hungarian, in the 20th years of 19th century. He could not accept Descartes's cosmology and did not understand Newton's mathematical concept of the gravitation. Dohovitsh was a corresponding member of the Hungarian Learned Society (=the name of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in that time) and he was one of the most important contributors of the Hungarian "Dictionary of Philosophy" ("Filozófiai Műszótár", Buda, 1834th), too.
