Abstract

| The research uncovered and detailed the conditions, standing and processes in the southwestern part of the Budapest metropolitan region, with more than ninety deep interviews with residents and decision-makers, and with a representative survey of 1204. Delineating and analysing the micro-level features was among the focal objectives, too. The rate and characteristics of suburbanisation in each settlement differ significantly, as well as the economic structure. Thus we may identify upper-class residential suburb adhering to the capital and with no economic activity (Budakeszi); emerging nuclei in the present polycentric urban development with strong labour demand and ascending and homogenising local society (Biatorbágy, Törökbálint, Budaörs); and settlements less affected by such tendencies, but unambiguously suburbanising where the economic activities are rather scarce. Within this general picture, however, remarkable tensions can be detected, both in economic and social terms. Beyond the afore-said trends, the research also detected the changes, enforced by the migration and suburbanisation, in the local society, its management and local politics: professionalising local administration and new managerial attitudes building upon more participation of local actors.
