Abstract

This paper presents the phytosociological characteristics of hardwood gallery forests along the Kerka stream in southwestern Hungary. These forests grow on the alluvial plain of the stream, where their habitat is moderately influenced by the relatively high level of groundwater. These forests are particularly rich in sub-montane plant species, such as Adoxa moschatellina, Anemone nemorosa, Anemone ranunculoides, Asarum europaeum, Corydalis cava, Corydalis solida, Gagea lutea, Gagea spathacea, Galanthus nivalis, Galeobdolon luteum, Hedera helix, Isopyrum thalictroides, Scilla drunensis etc. Some of these species are recent arrivals from the nearby mountains, whereas some others are relics of a former cooler and more humid climatic period. The presence of some sub-Mediterranean elements (Carex strigosa, Helleborus dumetorum, Knautia drymeia) suggests a weak relationship to the oak-hornbeam woods (Helleboro dumetorum-Carpinetum) growing in the vicinity, in the Zala Hills. The high frequency of the meadow fritillary (Fritillaria meleagris) in this area is particularly noteworthy. The studied forest stands sharply differ from the oak-ash-elm woods in the Szigetköz, but show a greater degree of similarity to hardwood gallery forests (Carici brizoidis-Ulmetum) that grow in the floodplains of the Mura and Drava rivers. As a result, they are identified with the latter association.
