Abstract

This article presents an overview of the changing environment and the related transformation of the Hungarian Defense Forces (HDF) in the post-2001 period to evaluate the impact, among other factors, of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF-Afghanistan) mission. It argues that to this end an in-depth examination of defense modernization is required, with special view to the broader context of the war on terror. It is with this context in mind that certain aspects of Hungary’s involvement in Afghanistan can be understood, as well as how the effects that this involvement had on the HDF can be assessed.
