Abstract

| Essential results published already in professional journals: Spectral problems of (in a certain sense) nonnegative coefficient matrix or operator polynomials in finite or infinite dimensional, partially ordered Banach spaces or Banach algebras, respectively. Factorization questions of a nonnegative character, existence of spectral divisors. Characterization of the irreducibility of finite or infinite matrices of certain structures (of Toeplitz or Hankel types). Nonnegative realizations of linear time-invariant discrete systems, upper estimates for the dimensions of the state space, realizing algorithms. Representation of linear time-invariant discrete systems as a difference of two linear positive systems, estimates for the dimensions, algorithms. With the means of systems theory we introduced and studied the concept of generalized matrix-geometric invariant measures in the case of Markov chains of certain types. We have solved a remarkable open problem by showing that not each positive invariant measure of a transient quasi-birth-and-death process is matrix-geometric, but it is often contained in one of the generalized classes. In the inverse spectrum problem of matrices with nonnegative entries we found the exact answer to how large the spectral radius must be in order, together with any complex self-conjugate spectral sublist of n-1 numbers from the closed unit disc, it be the spectral list of some nonnegative matrix of order n.
