Abstract
Mihály Babits (1883–1941), unanimously considered one of the leading figures of modern Hungarian poetry and the poeta doctus of his age, started his career with a period of thorough self-education in foreign languages and literatures. He tested his language skills and poetic ability not only by translating classics from Latin, Greek, English, French, German and Italian, but also by writing original poems in foreign languages. Among those attempts that survived in manuscript, the French material stands out both in quantity and significance. This paper not only edits and publishes his collected French poems, but also reveals special qualities like their self-reflexive playfulness, their versatile experimentation with genres, and their intertextual richness.
