Abstract

| In the karstecological system elevation affects the state of the soil, the vegetation cover and the quality and quantity of infiltrating waters. We investigated the morphometry of dolines with the help of a digital elevation model created from aerial imagery and found an error of up to 5 m of the contours on the topographic map. We described depth characteristics based on the ratio of projected area and surface area thus creating a new morphological parameter. Concerning the spatial distribution of soil types in Aggtelek karst we found that brown rendzinas were situated on the slopes and ridges, black rendzinas on the plateaus while brown forest soils in some smaller sections on the bottom of valleys. Using a digital elevation model we found a strong correlation between the erosional indices derived from the model and the measured characteristics of soils. According to our investigations of karstic waters in Bükk Mts., the heavy metal content in the springs was usually under the threshold limit except for cadmium and lead, which exceeded it. Of the other pollutants P042- content was high indicating anthropogenic influences and the values of Ca2+ and Mg2+ were also high. Our vegetation studies mainly consisted of forest research. Using automated aerial image analysis in the Őserdő in Bükk Mts. we have shown that the average stand height has increased by 3 m in 40 years and the forest-covered area increased by 7%. Our investigations in the Haragistya-Lófej forest reserve have shown that stand structure in this area was greatly influenced by the elevation and surface features.
