Abstract

| The aim of our project was to provide data about coding of human faces and to disclose the integration of visual and olfactory perception. The cortical mechanisms of face processing were examined with adaptation processes evoked by higher-level aftereffects. Strong gender-specific aftereffects were found in case of human faces and hands. We were the first to show that they parallel with the decrease of amplitude and increase of latency of the face-specific N170 ERP component. It has also been shown that both the behavioural aftereffect and the electrophysiological adaptation effects are category-specific. While investigating the spatial specificity of the process it was found that in the neural background of the aftereffects stand joint adaptation of position-invariant and position-specific neurons. By varying the duration of adaptation these processes were separated and this hypothesis was also supported by our fMRI experiment showing that face-specific areas, located along the fusiform and occipital gyri have different adaptation dynamics. In connection with the chemosensory system we investigated the cross-modal interaction of male sex hormone-like steroids. Our experiments have shown that these substrates are able to influence the gender discrimination and categorization of human faces. To conclude our results suggest that a complex networkis responsible for our face processing that is effected by both temporal information and input from other modalities.
