Abstract

| The research project has investigated the revolutionary transformation taking place in Hungarian sylviculture in the early 19th century, according to the different proprietary sectors. The essence of this transformation was a switch-over from regulated forest exploitation to modern planned forest management based on cutting rotation. In the new system, the regeneration of the forest was not left to nature, but it was assisted by conscious human intervention. Major part of the research work was constituted by exploring archival original, hand-written, and also, German -and Hungarian-language printed sources, considering, that sylviculture is a disregarded field of research in Hungary, even within agrarian historiography. Therefore, the source-material explored and used in the course of the research work has a value of novelty from the aspect of economic history as well. I represented the transformation of forest management through the examination of ten domains composing the entailed property of the Festetics family. In this choice I was motivated by the richness of source-material available on the one hand, and by the important part played by count György Festetics in Hungarian economic and cultural history on the other, and also by the favourable spatial structure of the property, where the individual estates represent all the regions of Transdanubia.
