Abstract
The career of Gábor Téglás, an archaeologist who was born in Braşov/Kronstadt/Brassó (23 March 1848), is a good example of the romantic nationalism in Transylvania and a colourful personality in Central European archaeology in the second half of the 19th century and the first years of the 20th century. The works of Gábor Téglás can be considered a transition between the antiquarian attitude and the exact documenting and analysing methods of professional archaeology. In several aspects he surpassed the antiquarian attitude, but as other factors also played a role, he did not manage to exceed a certain level. His personality and enthusiasm set a great example of the positivist attitude in humanities in late romanticism.
