Abstract

| The major specific aim of our research was to determine the molecular mechanism by which calcium influx factor (CIF) leads to the activation of the store-operated calcium entry pathway. We have obtained important new data about the production and the direct target of CIF that resulted in the discovery of a novel membrane-delimited cascade that activates plasma membrane calcium channels. Our search for the precursors of CIF have provided exciting information about the relation between glucose metabolism and calcium signaling in both yeast and mammalian cells.
