Abstract

The adsorption characteristics of methyloxirane over Pd/SiO2 and Rh/SiO2 and its surface modifying properties were studied by IR spectroscopy. It was found that methyloxirane adsorbed irreversibly and the adsorption was dissociative resulting in relatively hydrogen-rich carbonaceous species strongly attached to the surface of the catalysts. Further, through monitoring the intensities and positions of CO vibration bands over the Rh/SiO2 catalysts it was found that methyloxirane oxidized the Rh surface as was suspected on the basis of kinetic measurements performed previously.
