Abstract
The aim of this study is to describe the main trends of land-use changes in the Balaton catchment area and its subareas applying agricultural census data.There is a great difference in landuse change between the inshore settlements and the rest of the catchment area of the Lake Balaton. The greatest changes were detected between 1913 and 1935, when the territory of orchard and vineyards decreased considerably. At this time the proportion of orchards and vineyard areas of inshore settlements was higher than of the whole catchment. This fact is in connection with the increasing importance of inshore settlements in recreation since 1913.
