Abstract

| The structure, zonation and characteristic species-assemblages of epiphyton, epilithon, epipsammon and epipelon were described. Special attention were paid to the quantitative changes of biomass of biotecton in the area of littoral Phragmites-stands and stony zone, as well as, their colonization and species composition of dominant algal- and invertebrate associations, respectively In the zootecton of the littoral-zone mainly Spongilla spp., zebra mussel and Corophium dominated in variable quantities along the longitudinal axis of the lake. Detailed investigations discovered the quantitative variations of Ponto-Caspic Amphipods colonizing biotectons and also the appearance and distribution of a new species to L. Balaton, the hydropolip (Cordylophora caspia), have been described. Studying the macroscopic invertebrates, the distribution of 109 Chironomid species was recognized, and 8 of them proved to be new to the fauna of Hungary and among 20 Odonata species some protected ones were found. According to investigations during the last couple of years, we quantitatively described the fish-communities in the littoral-zone of L. Balaton and in its inflows. The methodological problems of EU Water Framework Directives were revealed and detailed suggestions were developed. The size, distribution and possible recruitment of silver carp stocks, introduced into the lake, were surveyed with the use of hydroacoustic methods.
