Abstract

In the 18th century medics were using printed publications more and more frequently to acquire new knowledge necessary for practising medicine. Scientific periodicals became better available in the Carpathian Basin too, but theses, disputations and dissertations also remained important sources of information for doctors. These publications didn’t necessarily enter the circulation of book retail even in Western Europe and it was more difficult to get them in Kingdom of Hungary: in the century of Enlightenment there were no professional booksellers in Kingdom of Hungary until the reign of Joseph II. If someone wanted to get a thesis book in the Carpathian Basin it was a very difficult task indeed, because the stock of printers, bookbinders and travelling booksellers operating in the country didn’t satisfy demand for such special items. In school towns and at auctions organised as part of probate procedures university publications did turn up, but obviously these weren’t new works but books published a few decades earlier. Hungarian intelligentsia only had the chance to learn about current academic debates taking place in the universities of Western Europe in time if it established some kind of system of personal relationships with the given institution. Typically these relationships were realised as correspondence with the university’s professors or by peregrinating students acting as intermediaries. In my paper I try to examine how dissertations written in Basel ended up in the Kingdom of Hungary. Did practicing doctors in the Kingdom of Hungary use them in their work? What kind of system of relationships was necessary to acquire these printed publications?
