Abstract

Based on the leaf morphology, by means of various statistical methods, the interpopulation and intrapopulation variability of pubescent oak (Quercus pubescens) was assessed. The samples of 10 populations from the whole area of species distribution in Croatia were analysed. The populations, as well as the trees inside the populations, differ significantly. Apart from that, the intrapopulation variability is higher than the interpopulation one. The size of the leaf is in significant correlation with the climate characteristics while other characteristics did not show a more meaningful correlation with the climate data. A multivariate analysis showed that the populations differentiate themselves to a North and a South group due to climate differences, but also because of the influence of a genome of the Q. petraea on the genome of the researched populations in the continental part of Croatia. The results obtained will enable a better conservation of the species genetic resources.
