Abstract
Pulsatilla pratensis (Ranunculaceae) colour variants and their distribution were studied in several populations in Central and Eastern Europe. No correlation was found between geographical distribution and flower color. Pale flowered specimens with yellowish colour on the inner surface of perianth segments ( P. pratensis var. flavescens ) were found outside of the Carpathian Basin in Ukraine and Poland. Thus, endemism of such color variants on the level of subspecies can hardly be considered. Moreover, exclusivity of the named colour variants is not valid to the Nyírség and surrounding area, since at most of the classic populations of P. pratensis var. flavescens are not uniform from the view of flower colour. At these habitats dark violet flowered specimens — can be identified as P. pratensis var. nigricans — are stably occurring as well. Dark flowers were found dominant over pale flowers in Pulsatillo-Pinetalia communities in Ukraine. In controversy, pale flowers are dominant over dark flowers on dune tops in Potentilla arenaria-Festuca trachyphylla associations at the same area. Such colour distributional anomaly was not experienced in Poland, where no dark violet flowers were found at all.
