Abstract
Graduality is defined as a functional–semantic category, and its diverted means create a functional–semantic field. Words which are capable of expressing various degrees of intensity are considered as graded and grading units. The character of graduality is expressed by its special grading function. The extension of meaning takes place at the expense of a continuous (“connotative”) seme of graduality in words used in a graded syntactic construction.
