Abstract
This study employed two-dimensional Principal Component Analysis (2DPCA) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to examine the total electron content (TEC) in the ionosphere 5 days prior to the deep Tobelo earthquake. This event occurred at 15:05:37 on 26 August 2012 (UT) (M w = 6 . 6 ) at a depth of 91.9 km near Indonesia. Using 2DPCA, a TEC precursor was identified near the epicenter of the earthquake lasting at least 10 minutes, from 06:10 to 06:20 on 24 August 2012 (UT). One possible cause for a TEC precursor of such short duration could be the high initial speed of released radon gas.
