Abstract
For centuries, architecture had an integral relationship with the city. Contiguous buildings defined blocks, streets, and squares—the public space of the city. Only the most important civic buildings were free-standing objects. Modern architecture reversed this, however, and anti-urban private icons replaced urban space. American universities have been one of our most original and poignant models of urban form. The point is that campus design is urban design, and urban design is the design and management of the public realm —i.e., public spaces — rather more than the private realm of individual buildings. The principles of these projects have become even more important as the contemporary environmental crisis emphasizes the value of compact urban development.
