Abstract

The paper deals with the problem of how can one describe the political attitude of the Roman Catholic bishops in the Hungarian Revolution and War of Independence in 1848 and 1849. The so-called “bishops’ conference” in the middle of the nineteenth century was a non-institutionalized but very important leading and governing circle of the Roman Catholic Church. The paper examines the potential members of the bishops’ conference and tries to characterize how the high clergymen related to the new liberal Hungarian government and the events of the war until the end of the year 1848. The conclusion based on the sources is that the Roman Catholic bishops accepted the new political system but represented the position of conservative opposition.
