Abstract

Texts related to the figure of Saint Cyprian of Antioch have a millennial historical tradition. The prayer of this Catholic Saint, who was a pagan magician before his conversion, only constitutes a single thread of this multi-layered textual network. These prayers were translated from different Latin versions into vernacular languages, and they exist in printed form since the second half of the 16th century. Medieval Latin sources and direct antecedents of this prayer have received little attention so far, therefore I want to contribute to alleviating this gap with my study of sources, in which I present the 15th century Latin version of Saint Cyprian’s Prayer preserved in a handwritten Venetian book of exorcism. In parallel, I will present some characteristics of the exorcist books of the late Medieval Ages.
