Abstract
Educational levels and naming practices in Urziceni (Csanálos), Romania The paper studies how name-giving is affected by parents’ level of education. It is built on a present-time name base, which was collected by the author of the paper from Urziceni (Hungarian “Csanálos”, a little village in the western part of Romania, near the Hungarian border). This study is based on forenames given in 1965–1989 and 1990–2011. It presents the name-giving practices and naming fashions of these two generations, in relation to parents’ different educational levels. For each of the aforementioned time frames, the forenames are categorised according to the educational level of the parents, who are responsible for the name-giving practice. For instance, parents with a lower level of education are more likely to choose traditional forenames for their children than parents with a middle level of education, especially as regards the first period analysed. However, parents with a middle level of education frequently choose foreign, up-to-date names for their children. All in all, this kind of research offers useful data for sociology and sociolinguistics as well.
