Abstract

The thesis of the article is how bilingualism and the majority language affect a community`s name base which consists of dominantly Hungarian native speakers. She works with a present time name base, which was collected by her. She summarizes the history of the community, because the root of common origin of this community is still present. Because of bilingualism and the majority language different name variants appear in the name base. The author examines the leg al back- ground of name giving in consideration to minority position. The majority of the laws in connection this filed can be characterized by a permissive nature, in spite of the fact that there are many cases when a newborn is a child of Hungarian native parents, yet authorities tend to use the Romanian metalingual counterpart of the Hungarian original, or fail to apply Hungarian orthography when registering the birth. The author divides the name variants into two categories: lexical and orthographic variants. This kind of research offers useful data for sociology, sociolinguistics and contact linguistics as well.
