Abstract

Andrew Leman The Call of Cthulhu (2005) című filmje1 felkínálja azt a lehetőséget, hogy a filmadaptációs teóriákat a szimulációelmélet felől közelítsük meg. A film olyan modellekre alapozott képi és tematikus világot hoz létre, amely a kozmikus horror zsánerjegyeit egy látszólag Lovecraft-korabeli, huszadik század eleji, klasszikus, fekete-fehér némafilm formájában alkalmazza. A visszafejthető modellek segítségével a kozmikus horror főbb lovecrafti motívumai bontakoznak ki a filmből: a forrásként szolgáló novella szövege; Lovecraft világának kozmikus, istenszerű lényeinek fiktív ontológiája (Cthulhu-mítosz); és a rettenet alapjául szolgáló egzisztencialista nihilizmus. | Andrew Leman’s The Call of Cthulhu (2005) is an ideal choice of film to reveal how film adaptation theory can be approached and reassessed by simulation theory. By digital means, the film creates an iconic and thematic world by models that are characterized by the generic traits of cosmic horror in a seemingly early twentieth-century, black and white, silent movie that corresponds to the technical givens available for H.P. Lovecraft’s contemporary filmmakers. The available models that make up the simulated ontology of the film unveil the most important motifs of the Lovecraftian universe: the text and textuality of Lovecraft’s short story “The Call of Cthulhu”, the fictitious bestiary of the cosmic “Great Old Ones” called “Cthulhu-mythos” and the existentialist nihilism behind the ubiquitous madness permeating the texts of the weird and the cosmic horror story.
