Abstract
In 2023, Pope John XXIII’s social encyclical Pacem in Terris (Peace on Earth) is sixty years old. This anniversary gives a great opportunity to re-read the document, especially in the present situation of the war going on in Ukraine. Its teaching on peace is based on mutual respect for human rights, cooperation between nations, and the negotiated resolution of conflicts in the light of the principles of truth, justice, love and freedom. In 1963, the Cuban Missile Crisis almost led to nuclear war, and today the war in Ukraine could escalate at any moment and lead to a similar situation. Just as sixty years ago, in our day too only mutual trust and mutually respectful negotiation can lead to the peace we all want. Peace is a common cause for all of us: not only Catholics, but all people of good will are invited to work for it in a joint effort.
