Abstract
The object of this study is the following unsettled question: do the word-families of Hung. agg and Hung. ó have a common origin or not. In 1917, József Szinnyey postulated the common root of these two groups based on the word ohut [oγut] in the Tihany charter from the year 1055, positing that the meaning for this word is ’old road’ – this interpretation of ohut is generally excepted to this day. However, closer examination reveals some difficulties concerning this meaning. As it is part of a geographical name, it would be a unique example from a typological point of view. Moreover - ut ’road’ would be the only word in the charter to appear both with and without the final consonant -u. According to the author’s reasoning, from the etymological point of view, the relatedness of the two families is an unsubstantiated hypothesis and one should postulate the existence of two independent word families: — agg ’very old (esp. person)’, aggik ’olden, aging’, moreover their derivatives aggik ’shrink’, aggódik ’anxious, ruminate on something’; their common PFU etymon being *šoηkз; — ó ’old, ancient (object)’, avul ’become obsolete’, avas ’rusty, musty’, avar ’fallen leaves’ and their derivatives; their common PU etymon being *oma.
