Abstract

A Szent Péter tiszteletére szentelt régi Bazilikának a bontása II. Gyula pápasága alatt, 1506-ban vette kezdetét, végül 1592-ben az apszist is elbontották. Ez a szentély az 1210-es években III. Ince pápa idejében újult meg, aki a plenitudo potestast gyakorolva egyrészt törekedett az Egyház megújítására, és összehívta a IV. Lateráni Zsinatot, másrészt fontosnak tartotta, hogy a világi hatalmát is érvényre juttassa. A bontás ellenére az apszis mozaikképe ismert, mert a 16. század során több, de részleteiben eltérő rajz készült róla. A részleteket III. Ince pápa beszédei alapján értelmeztük, hiszen ő volt a megrendelő, prédikációiból kirajzolódik az ikonográfiai program, amely legkésőbb a IV. Lateráni Zsinatra készült el. = The demolition of the old Basilica dedicated to Saint Peter began during the pontificate of Pope Julius II in 1506, and the apse was finally demolished in 1592. This sanctuary had been rebuilt in the 1210s under Pope Innocent III, who, exercising plenitudo potestas, sought to renew the Church by convening the Fourth Lateran Council and also considered it important to assert his temporal authority. Despite its demolition, the mosaic image of the apse is known because several drawings of it, differing in detail, were made during the 16th century. The details have been interpreted on the basis of the speeches of Pope Innocent III, who was the patron of the work, and his sermons reveal an iconographic programme which was completed by the time of the Fourth Lateran Council at the latest.
