Abstract
The main objective of this paper is to analyze the role that the Received Pronunciation (RP) accent plays in the American movie industry. The paper sheds light on two significant observations concerning the RP accent and its impact on movies. The first observation highlights that RP appears to be just as placeless as a non-regional accent on the movie screens as it is in real life. The only regional connection RP has is that it is non-American. The second observation examines the children of movie characters that speak with an RP accent and demonstrate that as a result of its non-Americanness, an RP accent always acts as an icon or metaphor of some physical or abstract distance between the movie-goer and the RP speaking character. The abovementioned conclusions will be drawn after examining the most critical phonetic and phonological differences between Received Pronunciation and General American (GA) and demonstrating their presence in the speech of stereotypical movie characters. The phonological phenomena examined include rhoticity, /l/-allophones, /t/-flapping, stressed syllabic r's as well as the /ɑː/-/æ/ and /ɒ/-/ɑ/ vowel correspondences between the two major accents.
