Abstract

The Hungarian Forest Act prescribes close-to-nature forestry in valuable forests, as e.g. in the buffer zones of forest reserves. Our research was carried out in the buffer zone of Bükkhát Forest Reserve in south-west Hungary (Drava floodplain). Our research was focused on the difference in the herbaceous layer between large gaps and control area (residual forest). Gap management in this time interval created a degraded habitat, with weeds and invasive species, very different from the residual forest. In the long term (after the successful restoration) a multi-aged forest stand can develop, the herbaceous forest species will also return if propagules are available.
