Abstract
Before the availability of the WWW the best way to preserve and disseminate research data was the print - in books, journal articles, later in the supplement series of scholarly journals, then in CD supplements. The size of the historic data volume is not negligible, but even today, a lot of data get published in articles - in the text, in tables, embedded in figures, data appendices discoverable, easily accessible and harvestable? How could opaque journal articles be made data transparent?
