Abstract
If we examine interventions on monuments, we can see that the static and geometrical relationship between the position of the original and added elements is typical of the structural and functional connections of the intervention. Thus we can reveal a connection between the static/geometrical relationship and the fulfilment of durability and utility claims. Taking this principle as a starting point, the interventions done on historic buildings can be ranked in five basic groups: reinforcement, addition, insertion, overbuilding and redevelopment, where amendments aiming at durability and utility prevail in different proportions, presuming specific structural relationships.
