Abstract

The children’s aid operation after World War I (1920-1930), when more than 60,000 Hungarian children were placed with Swiss, Dutch, Belgian, English or Swedish foster parents for a time could not be implemented after World War II. After 1945, holiday opportunities abroad for Hungarian children were much more modest than after 1920, although the need was high even after World War II. Still, thousands of Hungarian children were able to go to the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Denmark, Italy, France and Romania by holiday trains between 1946 and 1949. However, the political will was present only for a short time. The Communists’ rise to power and later the Iron Curtain prevented cooperation with Western Europe. Children’s trains, organised mainly by the Actio Catholica, the Hungarian Reformed Church, the Red Cross, and by organisations with a Communist background, such as Nemzeti Segély (National Aid), ran only between 1946 and 1949. In this article, the background and the history of children’s trains to the Netherlands will be discussed.
