Abstract

Nowadays, the behavioural history of church people (mainly pastors) in the socialist period has become an increasingly important field of research. Open and passive resistance have become collision points. In Hungary, the regime between 1945 and 1989 was openly anti-church, which made it extremely difficult to publish religious books and magazines. As a result of this, it became a common practice to smuggle religious literature in the country from Western Europe. German, Swiss, Dutch and Austrian Protestants were partners in this endeavour, and in addition to the donation of a rich book collection, they also supported the Hungarian pastors in a miserable situation with financial benefits. Thanks to his foreign connections, the late pastor Béla Borbély from Vencsellő, stood out concerning book packages he received from Western Europe. During his nearly four decades of pastoring, he received approximately 2,000 books and magazines from abroad. With all this, he helped the church members to read forbidden religious literature, which also strengthened their own community. This study presents the books and magazines Borbély brought to Hungary, as well as the persons who participated in smuggling.
