Abstract
The Reformed Church of Transylvania – similarly to the Reformed church districts in other parts of the Kingdom of Hungary – retained the office of the bishop. Although the canons specified the rights and the duties associated with this position, it is not always clear how they were fulfilled day-by-day. Former studies mainly focused on the biography of the bishops and not on the history of the episcopal institution itself. This paper presents the activity of György Zágoni Aranka, bishop of the Reformed Church in Transylvania between 1765–1567. Following a brief introductory paragraph on his election, the study examines various aspects of the office: conflicts between the church and the central government in Vienna, financial, administrative issues and disciplinary (canonical visitation) proceedings controlled by him, furthermore synods moderated by him as a president. To avoid the repetition of well-known clichés from the 19th century, these themes are discussed on the basis of contemporary sources (letters, synodal decisions, and royal decrees). This detailed and source-based research can be an important step towards a comprehensive study about the history of the episcopal office in the Reformed Church of Transylvania.
