Abstract

The purpose of this study is to present the establishment of the church county of Szilágy-Szolnok from a novel perspective. Originally, the church county of Szilágy was part of the Transtibiscan Church District. However, it became later to rely more and more markedly on the protection and support of the Transylvanian General Consistory. This originated from the specific legal status of the counties of Kraszna and Middle-Szolnok, which provided the administrative framework of Szilágyság (Szilágy region): Specifically, Kraszna and Middle-Szolnok counties were under the taxing jurisdiction of the Kingdom of Hungary but administratively they were classified as Transylvania. Since the situation of the Protestants was more favourable in Transylvania, it is understandable that from the first third of the 18th century, leaders of the church county of Szilágy increasingly sought protection in the region under the Transylvanian General Consistory, which led to tensions between the two church districts. In 1821, the outcome of this exasperating situation was that the General Convention in Pest ordered the congregations of Szilágy to join the Transylvanian church district, which led to the establishment of the church county of Szilágy-Szolnok. Based on archival documents, it was investigated how all these, i.e., the process of redistricting proceeded from the viewpoint of the church counties and to what extent they could control the course of events.
