Abstract

In the history of the Protestant schools in Hungary and Transylvania, the pastor’s and teacher’s professions intertwined. At the beginning of their career, many of the pastors worked as teachers, and then moved on to occupy more prestigious preaching posts. At the same time, there were teachers with a vocation who devoted their whole lives to teaching. The most prominent of these was János Apáczai Csere, who lived in the mid-17th century, studied under Johann Heinrich Bisterfeld, joined the Puritan doctrine in the Netherlands and returned to Transylvania with a doctorate in theology. In his inaugural address in Cluj in 1656, he outlined the state of education, not refraining from criticising the ecclesiastical and political situation. Referring to the example of the Netherlands, also he saw the solution in the large-scale development of education and the foundation of a university. This impetuous speech was understandably preserved in manuscript form, with the original Latin text appearing at the end of the 19th century and the Hungarian translation in the mid-20th century. Although it has already been analysed and studied in detail by many, it is worth revising it again and again, as every era can find lessons in it for the present.
