Abstract

The whole Bible speaks of praising God with song and instruments. The 150 Psalms are a prominent expression of faith, and are still parts of the church’s worship today. From the beginning, Christianity has been characterised by singing. The Apostle Paul specifically asks the early Christians: “Sing with gratitude in your hearts to God psalms, hymns and songs” (Col 3, 16). Singing itself is an exalted profession of faith, uniting both mind and heart. Throughout the centuries of church history, including the Reformation, faith has been expressed in a particular way through the artistic sounds of songs and music. Johann Sebastian Bach said, “The purpose of all music is to sing the glory of God”. The precious Hungarian musical tradition is a common treasure of all churches, which is why Zoltán Kodály declared, “Music is a spiritual nourishment and cannot be replaced by anything else.”
