Abstract
This study presents the history of the legal regulation of the Hungarian personal naming system, including the family names and given names and birth names, as well as the legal regulation of marriage names, from the time of the adoption of Christianity to the present. The legal rules that are in force at present on naming, choice of name and name changes are also discussed and analyzed. Some anomalies in the use of names stemming from the present legal practice are illustrated on some examples. In addition to the interpretation of the legal rules, the study also discusses the role of the Hungarian Research Centre for Linguistics in the assessment of new first names.
