Abstract

A magyar cirkusztörténetírás talán legizgalma- sabb vitás kérdése az elmúlt évtizedekben a Wulff Cirkusz Budapestre kerülésének története volt. Az egyik változat szerint a Brüsszeli Világ- kiállításról hozta az egész Európában jól ismert igazgató, a másik vélemény szerint Torinóból, vagy Franciaországból került az épület a magyar fõvárosba. Az is bizonytalan volt, kitõl szárma- zott az ötlet az elsõ állandó – ha nem is kõbõl, de szilárd vasszerkezetbõl készült – cirkusznak a budapesti Állatkertben történõ felépítésére. Egyáltalán, állandónak tekintették-e a kortársak, vagy annak szánták-e azok, akik felállították? Az új kutatások alapján úgy tûnik, egészen más történet bontakozott ki. Eduard Wulff az egész kontinensen rendelkezett érdekeltségekkel, tár- sulatát minden országban szívesen látták. Buda- pest egy ígéretes lehetõségnek tûnt számára, ahol azonban nem kapott megfelelõ helyet és támo- gatást a város vezetésétõl cirkuszépületének fel- állításához. Sem Wulff, sem a magyar kortársak nem gondoltak az Állatkertre, mint helyszínre. Serák Károly, az anyagi gondokkal küzdõ Állat- kert igazgatója sem állandó cirkuszban gondol- kodott, amikor a két fél szerencsésen egymásra talált. A Wulff Cirkusz egy évadra tervezett sze- replése helyett egy hét éves gyümölcsözõ kapcso- lat jött létre, amelynek végén happy end-ként a cirkuszépület Budapesten maradt. | In the last decade the most exciting and controversial issue of Hungarian circus history writing has been the arrival of Wulff Circus at Budapest. According to one version, the director who was well- known across Europe brought it from the Brussels World Expo. Others say the buil- ding was brought to the Hungarian capi- tal from Turin or France. We cannot know for sure who came up with the idea to bu- ild the first permanent – not stone but stable iron structured – circus in the Zoo of Budapest. Was it truly considered to be a permanent building by contemporaries? Was it intended to be such by the builders? Based on newer research it seems that a completely different story is unfolding. Eduard Wulff had interests throughout the continent, his troupe was welcomed in every country. Budapest seemed to be a promising opportunity for him but he unfortunately did not get a proper site and support from the city for the circus building. Neither Wulff, nor Hungarian contemporaries saw the Zoo as a location. Károly Serák, the financially struggling director of the Zoo did not want to build a permanent circus when the two miraculo- usly found each other. The Wulff Circus was intended to stay for one season but in- stead a fruitful seven-year relationship was formed. At the end of it, the circus building remained in Budapest, thus giv- ing the story a happy ending.
