Abstract

A budapesti cirkuszok épületállományának tör- ténete a 18. század végétõl vizsgálható. Az elsõ idõszakban más nemzetek cirkuszüzemeltetõi köl- töztek huzamosabb idõre a fõvárosba. A huzamo- sabb tartózkodás komolyabb szerkezetet igényelt a sátras formátumnál. Kezdetekben az épületek szervezése megegyezett a vándorcirkuszok kia- lakításával. Az idõ haladtával a cirkuszi funkciók egyre inkább az épület tömbjén belülre kerültek. A 19. század végén Eduard Wulff (Wulff Ede) épí- tette az elsõ cirkuszt a Budapesti Állatkert terüle- tére. A helyszínválasztás oka a Városligetben ak- tívan mûködõ Mutatványos telep sikere és az Ál- latkert látogatottságának felpezsdítése volt. A Wulff által üzemeltetett cirkusz tömegformá- lásában visszatért a kezdeti formához, ahol is az istálló, elõadótér, szállásépületek, fogadóépület külön helyezkedett el. Wulff utódja Matvej Be- ketov (Beketow Mátyás), aki elköltöztette a cir- kusz épületét 80 méterrel arrébb, az Állatkert szí- vébõl, az Állatkerti sétányra. A költöztetés ered- ményeként a ház jóval nagyobb fogadóépületet kapott, és felületet az önreklámra. A 20. század közepére az épület a végtelen felújítások után sem tudott kielégítõ választ adni a kor állandó szórakozási igényére. Az épületet 1966-ban lebontották, majd a helyére új cirkuszt terveztek. Az 1971-ben átadott új épület területében és épület-tö- megében nem hozott változást, megegye- zik elõdjével. Az épület belsõ szervezése, szerkezete változik, de több mint 100 év elteltével sem tud elszakadni a sátras cir- kusz téralakításától és funkciószervezé- sétõl. | The story of the circus buildings in Buda- pest can be examined from the late 18th century. In the first time period, circus operators of other nations moved into the capital for longer intervals. Longer stays required more elaborate structures than the tent format. In the beginning, the or- ganization of buildings was the same as that of traveling circuses. Over time, cir- cus functions moved more and more insi- de the building block. Eduard Wulff (Ede Wulff) built the first circus within the area of the Budapest Zoo at the end of the 19th century. The choice of location was justified by the success of the active showmens colony in the City Park and the desire to revitalize the Zoo. The circus operated by Wulff returned to its original design where the stables, the accommodation buildings and the main building were separated. Eduard Wulff was followed by Matvej Beketov (Mátyás Beketow) who moved the circus building 80 metres away from the heart of the Zoo to Zoo Lane. As a result of the relocation, the circus got a much bigger main build- ing and a surface for self-promotion. Despite endless renovations, by the midd- le of the 20 th century the building was not able to satisfy the era’s constant need for entertainment. It was demolished in 1966 and a new one was designed instead. The new building, inaugurated in 1971, did not bring chan- ges in its area and size, it was the same as its predecessor. The interior and structure were different but even after more than 100 years it was not able to break from the spatial and functional organization of a tent circus.
