Abstract
By the beginning of the twentieth century, the Jewish upper bourgeoisie had replaced the aristocracy as patrons of Hungarian scientific and, above all, artistic life. This article provides an overview of the main areas in which upper-class Jews distinguished themselves as patrons. The article then examines contemporary perceptions of this “Jewish” patronage, and concludes with some hypotheses about the motivations of the main Jewish patrons presented earlier. The article argues that the progressive acculturation of Hungary’s Jews, and their ever-increasing heterogeneity — a heterogeneity that is as much social as it is ideological and identity-based — makes it impossible to speak of any “Jewish patronage”, in the sense of an activity that had as its source in, or could be explained by, the Jewishness of the patrons.
