Abstract

Harry Hill Bandholtz azon amerikai katonák egyike, aki nagy népszerűségnek örvend hazánkban. Az amerikai tábornok a magyar nemzet örök háláját akkor érdemelte ki, amikor lovaglópálcáját is segítségül hívva megakadályozva, hogy a Budapestet megszálló román hadsereg katonái a Nemzeti Múzeum kincseit ellopják. Az amerikai tiszt ma is álló szobrát – mely Ligeti Miklós alkotása – hosszas diplomáciai vajúdás után 1936-ban avatták fel. Román részről a tábornok lejáratására tett kísérlet már 1935-ben elkezdődött. Gheorghe Mărdărescut – aki a román királyi hadsereg magyarországi főparancsnokaként többször is konfrontálódott az amerikaival – felháborította Bandholtz 1933-ban, New Yorkban angol nyelven megjelent naplójának stílusa, de legfőképpen a román hadsereggel szembeni szigorú kritikája, ezért 1935-ben a Curentul című lapban folytatásokban közölte ellenpamfletjét, melyben kísérletet tett a szerinte igaztalan és megalapozatlan vádak cáfolatára. A cikksorozat ugyanabban az évben összegyűjtve is megjelent kb. 1000 példányban, de Magyarországon teljesen ismeretlen maradt szinte mai napig. Érdekes adalék, hogy Romániában viszont Bandholtz naplója az, amihez szinte lehetetlen hozzájutni, példának okáért Kolozsvár egyetlen könyvtárában sincs belőle példány. Hogyan látja Harry Hill Bandholtz amerikai tábornok személyét és budapesti tevékenységét napjaink román történetírása? Elismerik-e a fosztogatások tényét a szakemberek, s amennyiben igen, mivel magyarázzák a Magyarországot megszálló román csapatok rablásait? Tanulmányunk ezekre a kérdésekre keresi a választ törekedvén arra, hogy képet kapjon az olvasó arról, hogy mi ma általánosságban a román történészi álláspont a fenti kérdések kapcsán. Harry Hill Bandholtz is one of the American soldiers who is very popular in our country. The U. S. general earned the eternal gratitude of the Hungarian nation when he used his riding crop to prevent the Romanian army occupying Budapest from stealing the treasures of the National Museum. Miklós Ligeti’s statue of the American officer, which still stands today, was unveiled in 1936 after a long diplomatic ordeal. The Romanian attempt to discredit the general already began in 1935. Gheorghe Mărdărescu, who as commander-in-chief of the Romanian Royal Army in Hungary had several confrontations with the American, was outraged by the tone of Bandholtz’s diary published in English in New York in 1933, but above all by his harsh criticism of the Romanian army. In 1935, Mărdărescu published a pamphlet in the newspaper Curentul, in which he attempted to refute what he considered to be untrue and unfounded accusations. The series of articles was published in a collected edition in the same year in about 1,000 copies, but it has remained completely unknown in Hungary almost to this day. It is interesting to note that in Romania, however, Bandholtz’s diary is almost impossible to find, for example, there is not a single copy in any library in Kolozsvár (today: Cluj-Napoca). How does contemporary Romanian historiography view the person and activities of American General Harry Hill Bandholtz in Budapest? Do experts acknowledge the fact of the looting and, if so, how do they explain the plundering of the Romanian troops occupying Hungary? Our study seeks to answer these questions, in an attempt to give the reader an idea of what the general Romanian historiographical position is on these issues today.
