Abstract
The more Liszt explored the Divine Comedy, the more he admired its author, Dante Alighieri. On 24 June 1849, he wrote in a letter to Carl Alexander, the future Duke of Weimar, that Dante was for him the pillar of fire that had led the Israelites through the desert. Apart from Dante, Liszt applied this metaphor only to Beethoven. In a letter to Wilhelm von Lenz on 2 December 1852, Liszt wrote that 19th-century composers should follow Beethoven as their pillar of fire and clouds. On this basis, one expects that Liszt’s Dante Symphony should be related not only to Dante’s poem but also to Beethoven’s oeuvre. The genre in itself leads to such expectations because every 19th- century symphonist wanted to become the successor of the German master. The present study examines how Liszt’s Dante Symphony refers to Beethoven, particularly his ninth symphony.
