Abstract
Why is a region more successful than another? Why do some areas get to a permanent crisis, while other areas get through easily these periods? The evolutionary economic geography (EEG) tries to determine the relationship between historical events and economic development. One of the central theories of EEG is path dependence, which has both positive and negative content. As a result of the positive feedback mechanisms of path dependence the „increasing returns” become decisive. At the same time, during the process, a region can be locked into a specific structure, from which the region becomes vulnerable to external shocks. The aim of this study is to present the conceptual framework and process of path dependence and evaluate its positive and negative effects.
