Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused not only a global challenge never seen before, but also disruptions in education systems around the world. School closures introduced by governments as one of the ‚general’ epidemic measures affected billions of children. Beyond the immediate impact on education, these closures have had far-reaching consequences for children’s rights in various areas of children’s lives, including access to nutrition, food security, and mental health, but have also brought with them several equality challenges. This article reviews the Hungarian educational legislative environment during the epidemic situation, also focusing on the practice of non-judicial fundamental rights defender institutions, which resulted that several points were (would be) offered for investigations from a fundamental rights perspective - also for the ombudsman’s office with ex officio initiated investigations, or by highlighting the problems appearing in the field using extralegal means.
