Abstract

Radnóti Miklós’s literary bequest is preserved in the Manuscript Department of the Library and Information Centre of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The bequest includes letters written by the poet’s mother, Grosz Ilona, in 1908 and 1909 to her fiancé and future husband, Glatter Jakab, a commercial traveller, during his trips to the countryside. The addresses of the letters indicate the stations in southern Transdanubia where Glatter stayed and where he received them. Very little is known about Radnóti’s parents from the scant documentary material that has survived. However, when reading the letters, the sparse registry records come to life: the recurring themes reveal some of the important events of the couple’s life together over one and a half years: the engagement, the search for an apartment, the organisation of the household, the reasonable use of financial resources, and finally the excitement and physical and psychological difficulties of waiting for a child. Illustrated with a rich selection of quotations from the letters, we follow the lives of Radnóti Miklós’s parents up to the poignant last letter to Bonyhád.
