Abstract

The paper aims to describe the relationship between Kazinczy Ferenc (1759–1831), a significant writer of late 18th- and early 19th-century Hungarian literature, and his brothers, focusing on the years following Kazinczy’s release from prison. Kazinczy József and Bossányi Zsuzsanna gave life to nine children, the eldest being Ferenc, who was destined for a brilliant career based on his extensive family network and accumulated capital of contacts and personal skills. This ambitious career was finally interrupted by his arrest in 1794 during the persecution of the Martinovich conspiracy and his sentencing in 1795 to an unlimited term of imprisonment. After six and a half years of captivity, Kazinczy’s return home in the summer of 1801, the rebuilding of his life, the establishment of his independent existence, and the upheaval of the status quo in the family life fundamentally changed the supportive attitude of his widowed mother and siblings. Kazinczy’s correspondence, diary notes, and autobiographical writings often reveal the nature of the conflicts, financial controversies, and differences in mentalities in several ways: the protagonists of this correspondence were Ferenc and his brother József, who attempted to take over the role of family leader from his widowed mother during his brother’s enforced absence. To reconstruct the events, the study uses these personal documents, which are primarily composed in a literary style, and which present the events, the behaviour, and the supposed motivations of the various characters from the perspective of Kazinczy Ferenc.
