Abstract
The present paper examines the use of dual place names on the example of four Hungarian atlases published in the past few years. These publications include a geographical atlas for secondary schools, a world atlas for general readership, the volume on environment of the National Atlas of Hungary, and the English-language edition of the National Atlas of Hungary – Environment. The paper presents the graphical limits of using dual names on geographic maps according to their scale as well as the Hungarian attitudes to the methods of indicating the Hungarian names in the territory of historical Hungary. The demonstration of the practice and purpose of indicating the Hungarian names and official names of geographical objects is richly illustrated by map extracts from the four atlases.
