Abstract
My paper follows the tormented history of the publication of Mikhail Bulgakov’s short novel (povest’) „The Heart of a Dog” in the USSR from 1925, and its way in Hungarian translation from the clandestine samizdat publication in 1986 until its success through six legal (and two copyright-law braking) editions between 1988 and 2017, always corrected versions by the translator, author of this article. Theater, film, and radio adaptations are also mentioned. The article is commemorating the 95th anniversary of the manuscript’s confiscation during a house-search.
